DAYTON DIGEST

Suitcases full of essentials delivered to Dayton youth

Donated suitcases packed with hygiene supplies are being used to support homeless youth in Dayton through Daybreak, a nonprofit serving young people ages 10 to 24. Organizers filled the bags with items like shampoo, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, and other daily necessities many teens and young adults may go without. Leaders said some youth arrive carrying belongings in trash bags or with nothing at all, making the suitcase itself one of the most meaningful parts of the gift. According to the report, Daybreak assisted 499 homeless children and young adults between 2023 and 2024. For vulnerable youth, this was more than a donation drive, it was dignity packed into every zipper.

Dayton firefighters honored ahead of May 4

Local firefighters were recognized this weekend by Operation BBQ Relief, a national nonprofit known for feeding communities after disasters and supporting first responders. The group served meals to crews in Dayton ahead of International Firefighters Day on May 4, a global day recognizing firefighters and emergency personnel. Fire departments across the region respond daily to fires, crashes, rescues, and medical emergencies, often under intense pressure. Events like this offer a rare chance for crews to pause and feel appreciated by the community they protect. In a profession built on service, Dayton made sure gratitude was on the menu.
