Good morning, Dayton!
Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... Dayton's St. Elizabeth Medical Center, now part of Premier Health, traces its roots to the Sisters of the Poor of St. Francis, a Catholic religious order that established a hospital in Dayton in 1878 - making it one of the older continuously operating hospitals in the Midwest and a reminder that much of America's early healthcare infrastructure was built by religious communities.

FOODIE FRIDAY
Dayton foodies, your weekend lineup of must‑try spots is here!
Courtlands Mobile Grill
Wings, fish, and ribs come off this food truck parked at Courthouse Square every weekday, turning a quick lunch break into the best part of your day. It sets up Monday through Friday from 11 to 1:30, so time your walk accordingly. Downtown Dayton's best-kept lunch secret.
📍Courthouse Square, 10 N Main St, Dayton📍
Smales Pretzel Bakery
Hand-making soft and hard pretzels in Dayton since 1906 makes this one of the oldest family-owned food businesses in the city. Fifth-generation owner Emma Smales carries on a recipe built on just four ingredients: flour, water, yeast, and salt. The Xenia Avenue location is home base, and a new spot in the Dayton Arcade connects the family back to its original roots, where great-great grandfather Rudy sold pretzels back in 1913.
📍210 Xenia Ave, Dayton📍
Lock 27 Brewing
One of the Miami Valley's most respected craft breweries, with house-brewed beers that are true to style and a gastropub kitchen that earns its own following. Named after a lock on the old Miami-Erie Canal, the tap list runs from approachable lagers to rotating IPAs and seasonals. The scratch kitchen and welcoming taproom make it an easy choice for a neighborhood night out.

DAYTON DIGEST
🛏️ Daybreak's Million Dollar Dream Just Got Its Cornerstone
Daybreak, the Miami Valley's only emergency youth shelter, is starting construction on a $1 million renovation of its Dayton campus after landing a $270,000 grant from the Lowe's Community Impact Program. Phase one builds a brand new emergency shelter space designed specifically for kids ages 10 to 17, with completion expected within a year. A later phase converts the current youth wing into services for young parents and their children, and Daybreak still needs about $500,000 to finish the whole vision. Chief Development Officer Tina Rezash Rogal put it plainly: "Our dream was going to cost us a million dollars." Daybreak was one of just 100 organizations chosen from more than 5,000 applicants nationwide.
📈 Turns Out We Are One of the Best Places in America to Start Over
Monster's new Build-a-Career Score ranked Dayton the 3rd best metro area in the U.S. to start a career, out of 100 large metros, behind only Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Akron, Ohio. The ranking weighed career opportunities against what it actually costs to rent here. Zillow landed in the same neighborhood, naming Dayton the 8th best metro for new college graduates, with typical rent at $1,360 in June, the 7th lowest among the 100 most populous markets. Monster career expert Vicki Salemi had a line worth taping to the fridge: "Don't sleep on these best cities to build a career."
🥕 Your Ohio Direction Card Is Welcome at the Farmers Market
The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services is reminding SNAP families that their Ohio Direction Card works at participating farmers markets across the region. Look for a sign that says SNAP, EBT, or Ohio Direction Card, then trade your benefits for tokens you spend with the vendors. Locally that includes the 2nd Street Market at 600 East 2nd Street in Dayton, Mission of Mary Cooperative at 619 Silver Lane on Wednesdays from 2 to 6 p.m., and the Cherry Street Local Farmers Market in Troy on Saturday mornings. Markets in Oxford, Springfield, New Carlisle, Piqua, Brookville, and New Paris are on the list too.

Dayton's cleanup effort is getting a community-sized boost
Montgomery County and Dayton City Commissioners joined Mayor Shenise Turner-Sloss on August 20 to relaunch the "Don't Be a Litterbug" campaign, a push to get neighbors cleaning up their own blocks. The most quotable moment did not come from a podium regular but from Serenity, a student at Meadowdale CTC High School, who told the crowd, "Understand that our environment isn't just something that you wake up in every day, it is something that you live in." County Commissioner President Carolyn Rice said the county makes the work possible by providing cleanup supplies and trailers stocked with tools, so groups do not have to buy a thing to get started. Mayor Turner-Sloss made clear the door is wide open: "Whether you are an individual, a nonprofit, a church, or a member of a business community, there is in fact a place for you." Residents can find program details and request supplies for their own neighborhood cleanup at donotbealitterbug.org.
