TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Dayton!

Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... Dayton's downtown Arcade - a stunning Beaux-Arts commercial building completed in 1904 with a soaring glass rotunda - sat vacant and deteriorating for decades before a major renovation reopened it in 2020 as a food hall and event space, giving the city back one of its most architecturally remarkable interiors.

The inside track on local happenings:

  • Eleven indie bookstores, one passport, and a weekend of discovering new reads.

  • A beloved Dayton waffle tradition returns for its 96th year, with proceeds supporting local nonprofits.

  • Kettering College celebrates a perfect first-time pass rate for two graduating classes.

FOODIE FRIDAY

Dayton foodies, your weekend lineup of must‑try spots is here!

SushiNero
Japanese and Spanish on one menu is a bold swing, and Lauren Stites lands it. The Flamenco Roll and the Atlantico Roll are the rolls to start with, then order the Stuffed Piquillo Peppers and the Korean Fried Chicken so the table has range. Takoyaki if you want the Japanese side straight. Tuesday through Saturday, 4 to 9, so plan accordingly.

📍20 S 1st Street, Miamisburg📍

Cake, Hope, & Love
A mom-and-pop bakery with a menu that rotates, which means part of the fun is seeing what is in the case that day. THE Buckeye Cupcake is the one with a following, the Honey Bee is the sleeper, and the Reese's Fluffernutter Bars are exactly what they sound like. They do wedding cakes across the Miami Valley too. Worth remembering next time you need to bring something.

📍1490 N Fairfield Rd, Suite B, Beavercreek📍

Tacos Barra Jalisco
A small downtown Miamisburg taqueria that opens for breakfast, which is the part most people miss. The Chilaquiles are the morning order and the Birria Tacos are the reason to come back at lunch. Carne Asada Fries and Chorizo Dip if you are feeding more than yourself. Breakfast burritos and breakfast quesadillas too.

📍105 S Second St, Miamisburg📍

🏠 The Couch That Turns a Place Into a Home
Your old kitchen table might be exactly what a neighbor needs right now. St. Vincent de Paul and New Life Furniture Bank are growing their Dayton partnership so families moving into a place of their own can afford the basics, a table to eat at and a bed to sleep in. The two first teamed up after the 2019 tornadoes, and leaders say this is phase one of a bigger plan to bring a community engagement center to the area. If you have gently used furniture to pass along, swing through the CityThrift drive thru on Edwin C. Moses Boulevard.

🎓 Kettering College Grads Earn a Perfect Pass Rate
Every one of the 58 graduates in Kettering College’s Physician Assistant class of 2026 passed the national certifying exam on the first try. The college’s Radiologic class of 2026 did the same on its national exam, giving both programs a 100 percent first time pass rate. President Dr. Lamata Mitchell pointed to the college’s supportive learning environment and rigorous preparation. That is a whole class of new healthcare workers heading toward Dayton area hospitals and clinics.

Find Your Next Favorite Book at 11 Local Bookstores

Starting Saturday, October 17, you can pick up a Fall Dayton Book Crawl Passport at any participating shop and spend the weekend wandering between 11 independent bookstores. There is no set route and no schedule to keep, so you go at your own pace and plan around each shop’s hours. Collect stamps from at least eight stores and you are in the grand prize drawing, which includes $50 bookstore gift cards.

The lineup runs from The Cozy Book Nook and Dark Star Books to Swoon Wine and Books, Jay and Mary’s Book Center and Manga Kingdom Books, each with its own corner of the shelf. “We all have our own vibes and specialties,” said Cozy Book Nook co-owner Leslie Garcia, who sees the weekend as shops cheering each other on and sending readers somewhere new.

A Writing Class for People Who Hate Skimming

Elmore Leonard said, “I try to leave out the parts people skip.” Nothing makes a reader skim more than long, flat passages of description that stop a story’s momentum. No matter what kind of writing you do (fiction, memoir, poetry, essay), this class offers tips, tricks, and exercises designed to make your descriptions come to life.

Everyone tells writers “Show don’t tell,” and this class aims to show participants how to do that effectively and creatively. The group will look at lots of published samples where description is doing double and triple duty in a story, and participants will write some of their own as well.

Class is limited to 8 participants so everyone can get feedback on their assignments.

📅 Saturday, October 17
📍 Contempo Roast Coffee & Roastery, 967 S. Main Street, Centerville, OH
