🏫 Kettering's next school is taking shape
Kettering City School District has selected Peterson Construction Company as construction manager at risk for the first phase of its Future-Ready Facilities Plan. The company will help guide the project through design before transitioning into the general contractor role during construction, with preconstruction services capped at $401,210. The district's visioning process has already brought together about 70 stakeholders, including students, staff, parents and community members. Plans include a 223,000-square-foot new middle school, a high school addition, targeted renovations and relocating the baseball and softball fields to Kettering Middle School, with design concepts expected in late October and a preliminary floor plan targeted for December.
🚌 Several RTA routes are getting a new look
Greater Dayton RTA is changing several routes beginning September 6, including adjustments to Routes 6, 12 and 17 and the addition of a new Route X12. Route 28 and the North Community Connector will be discontinued, while the revised routes are designed to provide access to jobs, healthcare, groceries and retail. Route 17 will also expand service into the growing Cornerstone area in Centerville.
🌱 Dayton youth can turn climate ideas into action
Dayton is inviting young residents ages 15 to 24 to propose projects through its Youth Climate Innovation Challenge. The program will award $1,000 to $5,000 microgrants, with $43,000 in total funding, plus technical assistance. Projects must be led by at least two Dayton youth and supported by a nonprofit or educational institution, with eligible ideas ranging from neighborhood cleanups and gardens to energy, transportation, food access and infrastructure projects. Applications opened August 17 and close October 2.
Five Veterans Honored in a Dayton Tradition 18 Years Strong
The Dayton Dragons and Dayton VA marked the 18th year of their Welcome Home event, honoring five veterans enrolled at the Dayton VA during a special celebration at the ballpark. This year’s honorees were Lloyd Lynch, Willie Clemons Jr., Larry Crutcher, Earl Sheppheard and Philip Hart, each recognized for their service and presented with an American flag that had flown over the U.S. Capitol, special coins, Dragons swag and other tokens of appreciation. One of the evening’s most memorable moments belonged to Lloyd Lynch, a 101-year-old WWII veteran, who stepped onto the field to throw out the first pitch. Lynch and the other honorees were joined by their families, who also enjoyed a meal together on the party deck as part of the celebration. It was a meaningful night that brought together baseball, families and a heartfelt thank-you to five veterans from the Dayton community.
