Good evening, Dayton!

Here’s Your Daily Dose of Dayton
Did you know... the Dayton area had an active brewery scene as far back as the 1840s, when German immigrant communities on the east side of the city established several lager breweries along the Great Miami River - Prohibition wiped most of them out, and the craft brewing revival of the 2010s is essentially a second act for a tradition that is nearly 180 years old.

Tonight’s Top Stories Around Dayton:

  • More than 1,000 carved pumpkins light up Grafton Hill starting tomorrow.

  • Sinclair lands $10 million to help local students get to college.

  • The Grande Illumination moves to December 4.

🎓 A $10 Million Bet on Dayton Students
Sinclair College has been awarded $10 million in five-year Talent Search funding, split across two efforts. The larger piece, $6.25 million through the Ohio Department of Higher Education, makes Sinclair the lead institution for the Central West Ohio region and will serve 3,500 students alongside Bottom Line and regional K-12 districts. The other $3.75 million renews all three of Sinclair’s federal TRIO Talent Search grants, reaching 1,500 students a year at Dayton Public Schools and Northridge Local Schools. The money pays for tutoring, advising, college and career planning, financial aid help, and campus visits.

🎃 Halloween Night Comes With a Spare Hour
Here’s a Halloween treat that isn’t candy: an extra hour to sleep in. Daylight saving time ends Sunday, November 1, when clocks turn back from 2 a.m. to 1 a.m. Before heading to bed on Halloween night, set any clocks that don’t update automatically back one hour. You’ll wake up to more morning light, but sunset will arrive an hour earlier on the clock, too.

🎄 The Parade Is Out, The Arcade Is In
Dayton’s Grande Illumination is moving off Thanksgiving weekend to Friday, December 4, after attendees and performers said holiday travel kept getting in the way. The kickoff runs 5 to 8 p.m. downtown, with the tree lighting at 6:30 p.m. on the Courthouse Square stage. The Main Street parade that followed it is being discontinued, and The Dayton Arcade takes over as a second hub with children’s crafts, performers, live music, a photo booth, and the Gingerbread House Contest entries. Laura Woeste, interim president of the Downtown Dayton Partnership, said the goal is to keep the tradition going without letting it feel stale, and most festival events stay free.

Nearly 1,000 Pumpkins, Two Nights, One Glowing Dayton Tradition

On a hill in Grafton Hill, sculptor Teresa Olavarria spent hours on Saturday, October 24 carving Dolly Parton’s face into a pumpkin in three dimensions, one of more than 1,000 that will glow this week. The Stoddard Avenue Pumpkin Glow started in 1994, when Judy Chaffin and her family carved about 30 pumpkins on her front porch, and she ran it every year until her death in 2018. Now in its 32nd year under organizer David Moyer of Keller Williams Advisors, it draws 10,000 to 12,000 people on good-weather weekends, with carvings this year including pirates, bats, and the Dayton Arcade with every window cut out.

It runs 6 to 10 p.m. tomorrow, Monday, October 26, and again Tuesday, October 27, and it is free. This year the glow is also partnering with Pink Ribbon Good, with a jumbo pumpkin carved with the group’s logo and pink event shirts sold to support its work.

Meet Murray

Murray is a 5-year-old English Cream Golden Retriever in Fairborn, and he had a fan club before he ever had a house key. Marion got to know him during visits to her daughter’s office, and the two hit it off immediately. So when the chance came for Murray to move in with her at 10 months old, it was a no brainer. He has been glued to her side ever since, close enough that she calls him her Velcro dog. He also answers to Yeti, Fuso, and, when the mood strikes, The Destroyer of Worlds.

The family calls him a broken retriever, and he has earned the title. Murray will sprint after a frisbee or a tennis ball with total commitment, then flop down with it and keep it like a trophy. Squeaky toys get investigated until the squeaker comes out, and no tennis ball keeps its yellow cover for long. He also insists Marion stand in the kitchen while he eats, and he can apparently tell time, because at 8pm sharp he finds her and holds the Jedi gaze until a Milk Bone appears. At nearly 90 pounds, he still claims his spot in the bed every night, and Marion says he is the sweetest pup on the planet.
